REDRESS organises and participates in training sessions in countries where torture is endemic, usually geared towards lawyers, civil society groups and public officials with responsibility to prevent or respond to allegations of torture. Over the past few years, we have worked extensively in Sudan in collaboration with the Khartoum Centre for Human Rights, the Sudanese Organisation against Torture and other key partners such as the IBA, FIDH and Physicians for Human Rights on a series of training sessions for lawyers working on domestic and regional torture cases and the impact of the International Criminal Court investigation in Darfur. We also continue to work with the Amani Trust and others on strategies to end impunity for torture and organised violence in Zimbabwe. In Peru, we initiated a dialogue with the Supreme Court and others on the institution of a new human rights jurisdiction at the Court, and worked with local civil society groups on strategies to activate this process. Furthermore, we are working with the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT) and other partners on the legal component of a multi-year training and capacity building programme on the implementation of the Istanbul Protocol, the “Manual on the Effective Investigation and Documentation of Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (The Istanbul Protocol). ” The first phase of this initiative focused on 5 countries: Georgia , Mexico , Morocco , Sri Lanka and Uganda . We are also working with the Belgian NGO Avocats sans Frontieres on a series of legal training initiatives in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi .
