REDRESS management and trustees updates

REDRESS is pleased to welcome Ian Martin, former Secretary General of Amnesty International, to our Board of Trustees. He has over 40 years’ experience in the field of human rights and has held senior positions with Amnesty International and the United Nations.

Martin holds a Bachelor’s Degree in History and Economics from the University of Cambridge and a Master’s in Development Economics from Harvard. He worked for the Ford Foundation and was the General Secretary of the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants before becoming Secretary General of Amnesty International from 1986-1992.

Martin joined the United Nations in 1993 working with the UN Mission in Haiti. Since then, his peacekeeping work with the UN has taken him around the globe, including on missions to Rwanda, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ethiopia and Eritrea, Nepal and East Timor. He was also Head of the Headquarters Board of Inquiry into several incidents that took place during the 2008-2009 Gaza War. Most recently, he was the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative and Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya.

Martin joins REDRESS’ Board of Trustees just as Frances Pinter and Jennifer White Callaghan move on. Pinter, the founding publisher at Bloomsbury Academic and the founder and executive director of Knowledge Unlatched, became a Trustee in 2006. White Callaghan, a lawyer and Senior Associate at Allen & Overy LLP, joined the Board of Trustees in 2008.

REDRESS is also pleased to announce the return on 1 July of our Director Carla Ferstman, who has spent nine months in residence at the United States Institute of Peace on a prestigious Jennings Randolph Senior Fellowship. Ferstman has been Director of REDRESS since 2005. She will be taking over from Dadimos Haile, who acted as Interim Director during her leave of absence.
