26 June UN Day in Support of Victims of Torture

The 26th of June commemorates the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. REDRESS will join the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum to speak at its "Service in Solidarity with Victims and Survivors of Torture" at St. Paul's Church, Covent Garden, London.

Carla Ferstman, REDRESS' Director, said:

"Much more needs to be done to ensure our solidarity with the many torture survivors in our midst. The UN Day in Support of Victims of Torture is an occasion for every citizen, to say enough is enough - torture is inhuman and we don't subscribe to it."

Torture Survivors Fight for Justice in the UK

For the first time, torture survivors may be able to seek justice against their perpetrators in UK Courts. If passed, the Torture (Damages) Bill would allow Les Walker and many like him to claim damages against the regime responsible for their torture: justice previously denied to them. The Bill is soon to be voted on in the House of Lords.

Baha Mousa UK Compensation Payout
REDRESS welcomes yesterday’s agreement that the UK Government will pay £2.83m compensation to the family of Baha Mousa. The settlement and official apology goes a long way towards bringing justice to these victims of UK Army brutality.
