 RAISING AWARENESS

Torture occurs in all parts of the world with alarming frequency. Even though just about every country publicly recognises that torture is illegal, the practice continues unabated because of the failure of many states to take proactive steps to eradicate the practice. Furthermore, because torture remains a taboo subject in many parts of the world, those that have been subjected to torture often do not know where to turn for help, they feel isolated and alone, and hesitant to raise their treatment with the authorities or the wider public.

Drawing greater attention to the practice of torture serves a number of purposes:
- It serves to make responsible the governments and officials that continue the practice, in order to compel them to take the necessary steps to eradicate torture

- It gives greater support and voice to torture survivors, and helps them take steps to denounce their treatment

- It educates the broader public about the scourge of torture and how it affects vulnerable communities
