Russia

Torture and various forms of ill-treatment are a well-documented reality both in Russia’s system of law enforcement and the Chechnya conflict. REDRESS works closely with the Nizhny Novgorod Committee against Torture (NNCAT) (www.pytkam.net), one of the leading anti-torture NGOs in Russia. We have provided training on the investigation of torture and on the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) system. We intervened in the landmark case of Mikheyev v Russia before ECHR in 2005 and have since supported NNCAT in its highly successful work of pursuing cases on behalf of torture survivors, both from the region and beyond, before domestic courts and the ECHR.
