Abdelsalam Hassan Abdelsalam
Sudan Advisor
Abdelsalam Hassan is Sudanese lawyer who worked as a private attorney in law from 1982 to 1989 in Khartoum Sudan. During that period, he played an active role in defending human rights, democracy and the rule of law within the auspices of Sudan Bar Association. In London, he worked in the field of human rights with Human Rights Watch, Sudan Human Rights Organisation (Secretary General) and Justice Africa. He is the co-author of the Phoenix State, Civil Society and the Future of Sudan, 2001. Abdelsalam collaborated with the Redress Trust on several projects on Sudan before joining as a Sudan Advisor in October 2007.
Jo Deverson
Development Director
Jo has worked with a number of international and UK humanitarian and development NGOs over the past 12 years. Overseas work included three years based in India as VSO's Regional Programme Development and Funding Adviser covering six countries in South Asia, two years with a community-based disabled people's organisation in a Zulu township in South Africa, and voluntary work in a refugee camp in Croatia. On returning to the UK in 2005, Jo joined the International Rescue Committee as the West Africa Regional Programme Manager. Previous UK charity work also included being National Events Manager with Macmillan Cancer Relief. Jo has a BA in History from Cambridge University and an MSc in Development Studies from SOAS, London. Jo joined REDRESS in January 2008.
Carla Ferstman
Director
Carla Ferstman joined REDRESS in May 2001 as the Legal Director and became the organisation's Director in September 2005. She is the informal coordinator of the NGO Coalition for
an International Criminal Court's Victims Rights Working Group,
is an associate member of the Council of the International Criminal
Bar and is a member of the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office's
Expert Panel on Torture. Previously, she has worked with the UN
High Commissioner for Human Rights Field Operation in Rwanda on
legal reform and capacity building in post-genocide Rwanda, and
in 1999, was appointed Executive Legal Advisor of Bosnia and Herzegovina's
Commission for Real Property Claims of Displaced Persons and Refugees
(CRPC). She has an LL.B. from the University of British Columbia
and an LL.M. from New York University.
Dikey Ghung
Administrator
Dikey comes from a corporate background and has previously worked as an administrator and marketing assistant for a corporate real estate advisor in Zurich. She obtained her Professional Commercial Baccalaureate in Switzerland and is currently pursuing a degree in International Relations with the Open University.
Mariana Goetz
Advisor, ICC Programme
Mariana Goetz obtained her law degree at King's College London in 1995, and a Masters in International Law & Development at the London School of Economics in 1996. After campaigning for the establishment of the International Criminal Court for the organisation ‘No Peace Without Justice’ and as assistant to the Government of Senegal at the 1998 Rome Conference for the establishment of the International Criminal Court, she joined the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and later the Special Court for Sierra Leone where she was the Legal Advisor to the Registrar. Currently Mariana is undertaking a PhD at the London School of Economics on the use of international criminal justice mechanisms in post conflict situations and teaches Public International Law. Mariana has also undertaken training for the IBA Human Rights training programme for Iraqi Judges, Prosecutors and Lawyers and has consulted on transitional justice issues.
Jehangir Jilani
Consultant Advocacy Officer
Jehangir is a qualified solicitor in England and Wales and obtained an LLB in Law from the University of Leeds and took the Legal Practice Course at York College of Law. He trained as a solicitor in the City of London law firm Herbert Smith, where he went on to work as a litigator. He read for an LLM in International Human Rights Law at the University of Essex and has worked for several UK-based NGOs and charities. For REDRESS he is the Advocacy Officer promoting the Torture (Damages) Bill.
Kevin Laue
Legal Advisor
Kevin Laue is a Zimbabwean human rights lawyer who was in private practice in that country from 1984 to 2002. In 1996 he was a founder of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, which organization he chaired for the next five years. Originally from South Africa he attended Natal University where he graduated BA (Hons) LLB (cum laude). From 1976 to 1982 he worked for the International Defence and Aid Fund for Southern Africa (IDAF) in London, and was an active member of the Anti-Apartheid Movement. Kevin joined REDRESS in December 2002.”
Lorna McGregor
International Legal Advisor
Prior to joining REDRESS, Lorna was a Programme Lawyer at the International Bar Association where she led the outreach component of its International Criminal Court (ICC) Monitoring and Outreach Programme, working with lawyers in Sudan and Uganda to develop advocacy and litigation strategies to combat impunity for ICC crimes. She has previously worked for REDRESS as the State Immunity Project Coordinator and in Sri Lanka as the Coordinator of the Transitional Justice Working Group. Lorna holds an LL.B.(Hons) from Edinburgh Law School and an LL.M. from Harvard Law School, where she was a Kennedy Memorial Trust Scholar and a Henigson Fellow. Lorna is a member of the International Bar Association’s Taskforce on Extraterritorial Jurisdiction and is also a tutor in international law at SOAS.
Lutz Oette
Programme Advisor
(National Implementation and Capacity Building)
Lutz Oette joined REDRESS as the National Audit Project Coordinator in October 2001. In that capacity, he undertook a comprehensive analysis of the laws and practices relating to reparation for torture in 31 countries. Since this project has been completed in May 2003, he has taken over responsibility for thematic and comparative research, project development and capacity building initiatives with partners in different parts of the world. In particular, he has been responsible for a series of collaborative outputs with project partners in Bangladesh, Georgia, Iraq, Russia, Sri Lanka and Sudan.
Lutz Oette qualified as a lawyer in Germany. He holds a doctorate for his thesis on the compatibility of UN economic sanctions with international human rights and international humanitarian law and is a visiting lecturer at the School of Law, University of Westminster. Prior to joining REDRESS, he has worked with several human rights organizations and research institutions in Germany and the UK.
Jürgen Schurr
Project Coordinator-Universal Jurisdiction
Based in Brussels, Jürgen joined REDRESS in 2006 and is in charge of issues related to universal jurisdiction. In that capacity, he was in charge of a joint project with the Fédération Internationale des ligues des Droits de l'Homme (FIDH) entitled ‘Fostering a European Approach to Serious International Crimes’ until August 2007. He is currently Advocacy Coordinator for a joint project with a Kigali based human rights organisation, African Rights, on 'Ensuring accountability of Rwandese genocide suspects living abroad'. Prior to joining REDRESS, Jürgen worked as legal consultant for Human Rights Watch in Brussels. He holds a LL.B. from the University of East Anglia and a LL.M. from the University of Trier (Germany).
Nigel Scott
Finance Consultant
Nigel has worked in charity finance for 15 years following the completion of an MBA. As well as being a Charity Consultant he is Course Director of the MSc in Charity Finance at London South Bank University. He was Director of Finance for 3 national and international charities until leaving CARE International UK in 2002. Since then he has worked as a Consultant in Charity Financial Management with charities including ActionAid, Merlin, Refugee Arrivals Project and British Youth Council. He is Chair of Interact Worldwide and Treasurer of Richmond CVS and STAR: Student Action for Refugees.
Michelle Willis
Finance Manager
Michelle Willis has a Degree in Business Accounting from Wales University, and is currently qualifying for ACCA. She joined REDRESS in September 2003.
