Sir Emyr Jones Parry, GCMG, PhD, FInstP
Sir Emyr Jones Parry joined the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1973, and served in a range of postings, most recently as Permanent Representative of the UK to the United Nations in New York. Other postings include with the Office of UK Representation to the European Community in Brussels and as Deputy Head at the Office of the President of the European Parliament, Director European Union during the 1998 UK Presidency of the European Union, and then Political Director of the FCO 1998-2001. He took over as Permanent Representative to NATO in September 2001 and held the position until 2003, whereupon he became the Permanent Representative of the UK to the UN until 2007.
He attended Gwendraeth Grammar School, and studied Theoretical Physics at University College Cardiff before gaining a PhD in polymer physics at St Catherine’s College, Cambridge.
Sir Emyr Jones Parry is currently Chairman of the ‘All-Wales Convention’ – a body established by the Welsh Assembly Government to review Wales’ constitutional arrangements, and to consider the implications of the Assembly assuming legislative powers similar to those of the Scottish Parliament. He is also the President of the University of Aberystwyth.
